Addressing Mental Health and Housing Stability in Orange County: A Community-Based Research Proposal
||

Orange County, California, often known for its affluence, faces significant challenges related to mental health, drug use, and homelessness. These issues are particularly prevalent in underserved communities and among individuals living in poverty, as highlighted by the Community Action Partnership of Orange County’s (CAP OC) recent Community Needs Assessment (2023). The high cost of living and lack of affordable housing in the county contribute to mental health issues, even in more affluent areas where younger generations and others who do not fit the affluent mold struggle to maintain stability.

A proposed community-based research study could explore the intersection of mental health and housing stability, with a specific focus on these underserved communities. The Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) model would be the ideal approach for this study, as outlined by Collins et al. (2018). CBPR involves community members, organizational representatives, and researchers working collaboratively at all stages of the research process. This model ensures that the study is culturally relevant, directly benefits the community, and addresses the complex social issues faced by residents.

Understanding the relationship between housing stability and mental health is essential for developing targeted interventions. By identifying specific factors that contribute to mental health challenges in vulnerable populations, this research could lead to the creation of supportive housing programs that integrate mental health services. Ultimately, such programs could reduce homelessness and improve overall community well-being.

To successfully carry out this research, partnerships with local government agencies, non-profit organizations, and community members would be essential. Collaborating with the Orange County Housing Authority and local government agencies would provide access to critical data on housing and help coordinate supportive housing initiatives. Nonprofits that serve the homeless population could offer valuable insights and support for engaging participants and implementing interventions. Most importantly, engaging residents who have experienced housing instability or mental health challenges would ensure that the research is grounded in real-world experiences and that solutions are developed with community input.

Addressing the dual crises of mental health and housing stability in Orange County requires a community-driven approach that acknowledges and bridges the divide between affluent and vulnerable populations. By employing the CBPR model and fostering strong partnerships, this study aims to create sustainable, impactful solutions that enhance the well-being of Orange County’s most vulnerable residents.
