0:00 welcome to straight jacket podcast today
0:02 we had Jackie O she had a really
0:04 inspirational story about substance use
0:06 Mental Health and Family Dynamics so
0:09 we’re here with Jackie and Jackie if you
0:11 can introduce yourself a little bit Yeah
0:14 my name is Jackie um I’m a case manager
0:17 I work in treatment
0:20 uh I’m a recovering addict I spent 9
0:24 years uh addicted to heroin and probably
0:28 a bunch of other substances
0:30 um I grew up in Panama um and then I
0:33 moved to Montana which is like the
0:35 complete opposite of
0:37 Panama
0:38 um and
0:40 uh I don’t know I I think when I was
0:44 younger I experienced a lot of loss in
0:45 my life really young um within the same
0:48 year my my brother got murdered and my
0:51 dad committed suicide four days after I
0:53 moved in with him and
0:55 um my home life before that was just
0:58 kind of crazy as well so
1:00 I never really coped with anything I
1:02 just kind of went crazy with everything
1:05 I did in my life
1:08 um and I don’t think like I was honestly
1:11 probably an addict before I ever touched
1:13 a substance I like did everything to the
1:17 extreme
1:18 um but
1:20 uh yeah now I uh I’ve got a whole new
1:24 mindset in life which is crazy my life’s
1:26 so different today than it was five
1:27 years ago
1:30 and what do you think
1:31 like started that cuz like for how many
1:36 did it take you a while to get there
1:39 like well I spent two years in rehab um
1:44 consecutively and then before that like
1:48 jail um I was in the hospital for four
1:51 months right before I decided to come to
1:53 rehab because I I almost died I got like
1:55 a bad heart infection and then an bad
1:59 blood infection and Jail from Bad jail
2:01 tattooing cuz I make terrible
2:04 decisions um and even that wasn’t really
2:07 enough to scare me and to stop using
2:10 um and even when I came out to
2:12 California it was just like to try to
2:16 get out of the shitty lifestyle I was
2:18 living um because at the end it got
2:21 pretty scary um but I wasn’t like ready
2:25 to be sober I don’t think cuz I would at
2:28 first I was like not an alcoholic or
2:31 yeah I’m not an alcoholic I’m an addict
2:33 so I would try to like get away with
2:34 drinking all the time which doesn’t work
2:36 when you’re in rehab um and honestly in
2:39 life when you’re trying to find
2:40 shortcuts and everything it just puts
2:42 you back so I like to learn things the
2:44 hard way super hard way all the
2:47 time and how’s that
2:49 changed um probably a little bit Yeah I
2:54 try I try to be more um I think today
2:57 I’m more aware when I’m like making
3:00 stupid decisions like I can I can uh
3:02 pinpoint like when I’m
3:05 like making the wrong choice out of
3:08 either laziness or just because I don’t
3:10 like want to do something
3:14 um I’ve got better discernment today in
3:17 my decisions which honestly has given me
3:20 like in my work um for for treatment
3:24 like I really do believe almost anybody
3:26 can change cuz of the complete 180 my
3:29 mindset has has turned into cuz before I
3:32 never thought I would like I never
3:35 imagined this being my life and I’m
3:37 enjoying it you know what I mean like I
3:40 have real blessings in my life today and
3:41 that’s crazy it’s crazy uh what do you
3:45 think are the uh what do you think
3:47 changed your um I guess life and mental
3:52 health the most um in a negative way or
3:55 positive in a positive
3:57 way um
4:02 so especially like for my addiction I
4:05 think like a lot of my using and the
4:07 crazy lifestyle I lived um was because I
4:11 wanted to numb out everything um and you
4:14 can’t really numb you don’t get to
4:16 selectively numb out emotions or
4:19 thoughts or anything like that like you
4:21 numb everything when you start to numb
4:24 um so when I started to have like good
4:27 things happen again in my life and like
4:29 I was seeing
4:30 good things happen to other people in my
4:32 life because of the good decisions I was
4:34 making even if they sucked sometimes
4:36 doing the right thing sucks um like just
4:39 to not be a burden to everybody around
4:41 me or like a liability cuz I can do I
4:44 can be kind of
4:46 crazy um it’s it’s amazing really like
4:50 people trust me nowadays I trust me
4:53 which is weird you know and you’re
4:56 reliable and all that yeah it’s crazy
4:59 yeah so um in your you said you
5:03 experienced a lot of loss like early on
5:05 in your life so for how did you like
5:09 deal with that with your mental
5:11 health uh I would say I didn’t deal with
5:14 any of it I just like I suppress things
5:16 and I run from them um so I started I
5:20 started
5:21 drinking probably at about 1213 at the
5:24 latest um CU that’s just what my family
5:27 did like we would it it was just around
5:31 a lot um I started selling weed and acid
5:34 when I was in seventh grade um I would
5:37 bring bottles of VOD cup is as like a
5:40 water bottle in eighth grade and like
5:43 from like I was just never
5:44 sober um I never dealt with anything um
5:49 I was always I’m kind of an adrenaline
5:50 junkie I’ve always been that way but I
5:52 think it’s cuz I don’t want to deal with
5:54 whatever normal feelings I have I’d
5:56 rather have something crazy extreme
5:58 going on that I can like pinpoint in the
6:01 moment um yeah so
6:04 now how is like how did that change how
6:07 did you go on your mental health
6:09 [Music]
6:11 journey I don’t think there’s like any
6:13 one thing that like has gotten me there
6:16 it’s just been like a lot
6:18 of a lot of hard work that I didn’t want
6:21 to do but like I knew I was going to die
6:23 or go back to a terrible life that like
6:26 I’m starting to have good things happen
6:27 to me and then I can like see that and
6:29 appreciate that um that I don’t want to
6:31 lose and like today I have my freedom
6:33 which is very important to me I don’t
6:34 want to go back to jail either um or
6:36 prison that I I at least got out before
6:40 that um or death I have I want to do
6:43 cool things with my life my life was
6:44 spent doing from a very young age like
6:49 just crazy [ __ ] um I don’t know if I can
6:52 say that yeah what you can say whatever
6:55 you
6:56 want and like now like my goal is have
6:59 good experiences with good people around
7:01 me who are like actually my friend you
7:05 know what I mean and like I can’t put a
7:08 price on that
7:10 now
7:12 um honest working the in rehab I never
7:16 wanted to work the 12 steps I thought it
7:18 was
7:19 stupid I didn’t think I needed to talk
7:21 about my feelings or things I had
7:23 happened or [ __ ] up things I did um
7:27 but in the end that’s like when I
7:29 started of doing that cuz I’d rather do
7:31 anything than that i’ I’ll I’ll
7:33 Gladiator style fight somebody before I
7:34 have to talk about my feelings but
7:37 now my life is really changing like it’s
7:41 really changing and so I’m going to
7:45 stick to doing [ __ ] I don’t want to do
7:47 because I know that it gets me and
7:49 people that I love to a better place
7:51 yeah that’s where the growth comes in
7:53 yeah is there any advice that you would
7:55 give people um that are struggling with
7:57 mental health or addiction
8:00 you’re the only person who’s actually
8:02 going to be able to help you um you have
8:05 to do the hard [ __ ] like you got to get
8:08 up when you don’t want to get up you got
8:10 to eat the food you don’t want to eat
8:11 you got to go to the gym when you don’t
8:12 want to go to the gym you got to go to
8:14 the DMV when you don’t want to go to the
8:15 DMV you have to go to work when you
8:17 don’t want to go to work um for me it’s
8:20 you got to go to meetings when you don’t
8:21 want to go to
8:23 meetings um cuz I don’t I listen to a
8:26 lot of things about how like that
8:28 changes the wire ing or something in
8:30 your brain like the contrary action it
8:34 builds
8:36 uh I don’t know it builds like your
8:39 character in a way that you’re you’re
8:41 able to handle more without falling back
8:43 on like whatever safety net you might
8:46 have so and I also I trashed any safety
8:49 net I had before I came here like I
8:51 didn’t have any family I didn’t know
8:53 anybody I didn’t have any money left um
8:56 I was just in rehab so I had to like it
8:58 was just terrible but now I know like I
9:02 value all my [ __ ] that I have today in
9:04 the places I am even if sometimes I get
9:07 a little ungrateful like I just have to
9:09 remember where I came from which it’s
9:11 easy to get ungrateful I try really hard
9:13 not to do that to fall back into Old
9:15 thinking patterns but as long as I can
9:17 like be aware of when I’m or like catch
9:20 myself when I’m like being ungrateful or
9:24 getting agitated with things that
9:25 shouldn’t really matter that they’re not
9:27 going to matter next week like I can at
9:29 least do something about it or like be
9:32 better about it in the future because
9:33 we’re not perfect all the time that’s
9:35 for sure we don’t really reach a peak in
9:38 our life where we handle everything well
9:40 and we’re happy all the
9:41 time um life’s crazy and life life gets
9:45 Lifey as they say um so you just learn
9:49 to handle it better and especially for
9:51 me I’ve built a a connection like a
9:54 support group however small like I have
9:56 a real support group that I can lean on
9:59 with when I’m like lost in Life or I’m
10:02 confused or I I’m dealing with a lot of
10:05 heavy [ __ ]
10:06 like I have uh I have safety nets now
10:09 that are like real they’re not like
10:12 Foxhole things that I’ve made myself
10:15 yeah what is your view on uh like like
10:18 treatment like facilities and
10:20 institutions I think treatment works for
10:22 people
10:23 who want it um cuz if you don’t put in
10:28 the work if you’re not ready ready to do
10:30 if you’re not ready to look at yourself
10:31 or like your life or or try to be
10:35 self-aware or if you’re not if you don’t
10:37 think there’s anything wrong with the
10:38 things you’re doing you’re not going to
10:39 change because you don’t see a problem
10:41 with it um some people I think some
10:44 people who don’t think they’ve hit rock
10:46 bottom they’re not they they’re not
10:47 ready to change um because life hasn’t
10:50 gotten bad enough but they just if
10:52 you’re not happy like do something about
10:54 it so I think it’s a fine line of like
10:59 like treatment can be amazing but if
11:01 somebody’s not willing to listen to any
11:02 of the information they’re receiving it
11:05 doesn’t matter hopefully maybe they’ll
11:06 remember it one day and it’ll click
11:10 but and it can yeah it can sometimes
11:13 like lay the
11:14 foundation but yeah they have to be
11:17 ready to hear that
11:18 information so um how do you deal with
11:22 your feelings
11:24 now um
11:26 well I uh I I try to Journal I’m not
11:30 very good at it I used to journal a lot
11:31 more um cuz then that way I can like
11:34 look back and see where my mindset was a
11:35 week ago a month ago and like see all
11:38 the things that I’ve just been going
11:39 through since then because I think once
11:41 you get into a routine like things get
11:44 repetitive and you uh you’re not aware
11:46 of all the emotions and [ __ ] you got
11:49 going
11:50 on um I talk to people which is really
11:54 not easy for me like when you’re in AA
11:57 or na whatever you do when you go to
11:58 meetings you’re supposed to to talk to
11:59 people you’re supposed to open UPS to
12:00 people and I don’t like that I don’t
12:02 want to get your number I don’t want to
12:03 hang out with you after the meeting but
12:05 like that’s another thing that I’ve had
12:07 to do like the contrary action thing
12:08 like Reach Out make friends cuz cuz
12:11 people care if you actually like are
12:14 honest with them and and uh genuine and
12:18 you can do the same for them one day or
12:20 to somebody else
12:22 um I have I go to the gym a lot um been
12:27 trying to eat better just like little
12:29 things that help me with my mental
12:30 health to keep me on track I guess um so
12:35 I can get impulsive I can get like
12:38 ungrateful
12:39 um but I have things that I value today
12:42 so I try to keep myself grounded when I
12:46 lose sight of that yeah how did um like
12:50 therapy Take A Part in your journey
12:54 so honestly therapy has been like a
12:57 super hit or a super Miss cuz when I
12:59 first got
13:00 sober um I had a therapist tell me like
13:03 you’re unloading too much and like
13:06 you’re going to need to continue therapy
13:08 way on after this and I was like what
13:11 the um but since then like I’ve had
13:14 therapists who have like helped me like
13:17 people have tried to tell me things my
13:18 whole life um but like sitting down with
13:20 a therapist and they can like talk to me
13:22 like I’ve had like realizations that I
13:25 never would have had before even about
13:27 dumb little things that like stick with
13:29 you so you’re able to change patterns
13:31 and be aware of that [ __ ]
